Victor Ortiz, a former WBC welterweight champion, expressed disappointment over Floyd Mayweather's recent inactivity in the boxing world, particularly regarding their potential rematch. Ortiz, who faced Mayweather in 2011, believes Mayweather is intentionally avoiding fights to stay out of harm's way, a strategy that has left fans and critics alike frustrated.
In an interview with Bloody Elbow, Ortiz shared his thoughts on Mayweather's recent news, stating, 'It's a bummer, you know. It's a shame. People always wanted to see me versus Floyd, but realistically, something like that, he'll keep himself out of harm's way. He knows what was going to happen. We weren't going 12 rounds. I was going to knock him out but that was twelve years ago.'
The 2011 fight between Ortiz and Mayweather was controversial, with Ortiz being knocked out while looking the other way after a break in the action. Despite the loss, Ortiz has moved on and is now focused on his upcoming bare-knuckle boxing debut against Dominic Salcido at BKB 56 on July 18.
Ortiz admitted that the lack of a rematch with Mayweather was frustrating, especially since he believed Mayweather was intentionally avoiding the fight. 'It was a pretty long process, yeah, because you really have to wake up to living with everyone just remembering that moment,' he said. 'It’s one of those things where no matter what you have to say, everyone has their opinion and their expectations. I asked for the rematch countless times, even for free. We know that Floyd loves money. Keep all the money. I just want to knock you out.'
